Lot 5053
年代(Age): Jurassic 201-174 Ma。 尺寸(Size): 9×9×2 cm。 描述 Description:Unlike the common Promicroceras planicosta, this unique ammonite variety found in Marston Marble is known as Promicroceras marstonensis, a species endemic to Marston. These ammonites typically appear in mass assemblages, suggesting a catastrophic event at the time of fossilization. It is believed that massive algal blooms may have released toxins or depleted oxygen levels in the water, leading to a sudden die-off of ammonites—a phenomenon similar to modern-day fish kills. One of the defining features of Promicroceras marstonensis is the preservation of its original shell, giving it a distinct white coloration. In some cases, weathering reveals the nacreous (mother-of-pearl) layer, producing an iridescent sheen, making these fossils not only scientifically significant but also visually stunning.
