Petrified wood, also known as fossilized wood or wood metamorphic stone, is formed when ancient trees are buried and the inorganic substances in the soil—such as silicon dioxide and iron sulfide—gradually replace the organic material in the trunk. During this silicification process, various infiltrating substances impart a range of colors. Over long periods, the trees preserve features such as cells and growth rings, ultimately transforming into beautifully colorful petrified wood.
