The adult Aepyornithidae is over 3 meters tall, nearly as high as a floor, and can weigh up to 500 kilograms, more than twice as large as the largest existing bird, the ostrich. It lives in the forests of Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world. Aepyornithidae is the largest bird, and its number is not large, so its survival is easily affected by environmental changes. After the 16th century, humans immigrated to the island of Magasinica in large numbers and used slash-and-burn farming. The forests were soon cut down. Due to habitat destruction and human predation, the Aepyornithidae eventually became extinct in 1649, and no one has seen them since.
